Epilogue

The huge manor house was dark and partly burned. Its irregular shape in the moonlight reminded Princess Renata Sansona more of the carcass of a huge beast rather than a house. She could see similar thoughts reflected in the expressions of the men she had brought with her from the Lagunari brigade. These were veterans of ship-to-ship combat, men who had stormed cannon forts along the silver coast, and even they were ill at ease.

“Forward,” said Renata, waving her saber.

The front door of the house broke loose from its hinges with three strikes of the ram. The place smelled of rain and smoke. There were bits of refuse in the great hall, though it had clearly been unoccupied for some time.

“Maybe she left this place,” offered the Lagunari commander. “That witchwoman could have taken her. You know the rama are natural thieves and kidnappers. She could have gone back…”

Renata held up a hand to quiet him and walked across the main hall to the courtyard. An intertwine pair of strange violet flowers was the only thing alive in the dismal garden. The Lagunari commander sent his men off to search the sprawling manor and he joined Renata as the princess stepped into the courtyard. There was a strange smell to the air; perfumed, cloying even. It covered a strange scent of ancient caves and tombstones.

Renata took off her glove and reached out her fingers to touch one of the oddly fleshy petals of the flower.

“Sir! My lady! We’ve found something!”

Renata drew her hand back and returned to the main room. The trooper led Renata and the commander up the half-burned stairs and into a fire-gutted bedroom. The body on the ruins of the bed was burned and badly decomposed.

“Oh, Felisa,” moaned Renata, falling to her knees beside the charred corpse.

“It might not be her,” offered the commander.

“It is her,” said the princess and she took hold of the corpse’s hand. “I know it. The hair that isn’t burned is just like hers.”

The commander had the temerity to pull Renata to her feet.

“Come with me, princess. You should not see this any longer. I will have my men collect her bones, to be interred—“

“Leave me!” shouted Renata. “By the gods, leave me with my sister. Leave me and I will come to you when I am done.”

The Lagunari men hung their heads sympathetically and filed out of the burned bedroom. Renata waited for the men to leave before returning to Felisa’s side. She put her hands upon the body, so shrunken by the fire and the passage of time. It was many years since Felisa was sent away. Mother was dead and father was nearly insane with dementia. Renata had felt her sister was still alive, somehow, yet now she saw it had all been a mistake.

“I’m so sorry, Felisa,” wept Renata. “I should have come for you sooner. Now… now I will take you home to lay your bones beside mother.”

No…

The voice was distinctly feminine. It seemed to come from nowhere at all.
